Teeth whitening is a treatment to lighten teeth, and make them free of stains and discoloration. It is a common and popular cosmetic dental procedure to improve the appearance of your teeth damaged because of poor oral health.
What causes discolouration of teeth?
A number of factors contribute to the discolouration or staining of your teeth. The most common are:
Tobacco Use - Tar and nicotine are the two primary chemicals found in tobacco that cause stubborn stains on your teeth.
Food and Drink - Color pigments or chromogens found in coffee, tea, and red wines are the main reasons for a change in the colour of your teeth.
Inadequate or no care of your teeth - Some people are so lazy that brushing their teeth at least once in a day seems a big thing for them. Lethargic attitude and carelessness about oral health leads to discoloration of teeth.
Medications - High blood pressure medications, certain antihistamines and antipsychotics can change the colour of your teeth. If you are exposed to antibiotics such as tetracycline and doxycycline during your childhood or while in the womb, your teeth will become darker when you turn adult.
Age - As you age, the brightness of your teeth reduces as the enamel gets thinner and the dentin darker with the aging process.
Teeth Whitening Preparation
We start the whitening procedure by asking a few questions on oral hygiene routine and your lifestyle. Then we take a photograph of your teeth to monitor the effect of our treatment. Next, our dental hygienist cleans your teeth to remove any bacteria, or food substances to start the whitening procedure. Teeth Whitening Procedures
Once your teeth are cleaned and freed from bacteria, the gums around your teeth are covered. We apply a special kind of gel on your tooth surface. The gel has whitening agents called hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. A laser light is then used to activate these whitening agents that cause the stains to break into small pieces, thereby reducing the density of the colour and making your teeth brighter. Non-Vital Whitening
This whitening procedure is used for removing stains that are inside the tooth. A whitening agent is placed inside the tooth with a temporary filling. This is a one-time procedure since the tooth is left with the whitening agent and filling for several days. You can repeat the procedure in case you didn't achieve the desired shade of your tooth.
